If I walk straight south from my apartment, I cross the\u00c2\u00a0river at Pont Neuf, the &#8220;New Bridge.&#8221; This is\u00c2\u00a0a bit confusing, since &#8220;neuf&#8221; also means &#8220;nine&#8221; in French. There is a bar near me on Rue de Pont Neuf called &#8220;Pont 9.&#8221; Even more confusing is the fact that Pont Neuf is Paris&#8217; <em>oldest<\/em> standing bridge, built 1578-1607. But this bridges&#8217; 12 arches <em>were <\/em>new at the time since their design did not include the usual homes and other buildings sprouting on top.<\/p>\n<p>Post Neuf is my closest way to cross the river, so it&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0my home bridge. Actually Pont Neuf crosses the Seine twice as\u00c2\u00a0the bridge\u00c2\u00a0slices through the western prow tip of the river island Ile de la Cite.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>After Henri III laid the first stone for Pont Neuf, his son Henry IV\u00c2\u00a0got the bridge finished. A bronze Henri IV\u00c2\u00a0sits astride a horse in a large, pigeon-stained statue on the west side of the bridge. This is actually the second try at a statue of Henri since the first one was destroyed during the French Revolution in 1792.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Image:Statue_Henri_IV_Pont_Neuf.jpg\" title=\"Statue of Henry IV on the Pont Neuf\" class=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" width=\"116\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/c\/cd\/Statue_Henri_IV_Pont_Neuf.jpg\/200px-Statue_Henri_IV_Pont_Neuf.jpg\" alt=\"Statue of Henry IV on the Pont Neuf\" height=\"158\" style=\"width: 116px; height: 158px\" class=\"thumbimage\" \/><\/a><span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/images.google.com\/imgres?imgurl=http:\/\/arted.osu.edu\/160\/images\/earth\/cj_pontn.gif&amp;imgrefurl=http:\/\/arted.osu.edu\/160\/13_Christo.php&amp;h=150&amp;w=210&amp;sz=25&amp;hl=en&amp;start=2&amp;tbnid=Uc7P7xYpfTX2PM:&amp;tbnh=76&amp;tbnw=106&amp;prev=\/images%3Fq%3Dchristo%2Bwraps%2Bpont%2Bneuf%26gbv%3D2%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG\"><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Henri VI\u00c2\u00a0reigned for 57 years (1553-1610) and was grandfather to Louis XIV. Grandpa Henri&#8217;s nickname,\u00c2\u00a0<em>Vert-Galant<\/em> (Green Knight), is also the name of the park\u00c2\u00a0(<em>Parc Vert Galant<\/em>) at the western tip of the island (see the tree-lined park in the middle of the image below). Even with all the picnickers and kids, I love this little park. There are supposedly visages of 299 men and one woman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span><span>Pierre Curie was killed on Pont Neuf by a horse-drawn carriage during a snowstorm or heavy rainstorm (I found citations for both)\u00c2\u00a0in April 1906. His skull was fractured under the carriage wheels, perhaps saving him a more agonizing death from the radiation exposure that eventually killed his wife, the Polish scientist\u00c2\u00a0Marie Sklowdowska-Curie in 1934.<\/span><\/span><span><span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Jacques de Molay, the 23rd and last Grand Master of the Knights Templar, was burned at the stake near Pont Neuf in 1314, an execution ordered by King Philippe le Bel. A plaque honoring De Molay is overhead as you exit the stairs from the bridge, facing west towards the park. There&#8217;s a stone face without facial hair to the far right of this plaque that may be the sole female figure on the bridge.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>The Bulgarian installation artist Christo wrapped Pont Neuf in many yards of gold canvas in 1985 (see image below).\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/images.google.com\/imgres?imgurl=http:\/\/www.christojeanneclaude.net\/sharedMedia\/PontNuef\/pn3.jpg&amp;imgrefurl=http:\/\/thisdaybaseball.blogspot.com\/2006_02_26_archive.html&amp;h=412&amp;w=612&amp;sz=78&amp;hl=en&amp;start=6&amp;tbnid=qJqqu_UoPorKgM:&amp;tbnh=92&amp;tbnw=136&amp;prev=\/images%3Fq%3Dchristo%2Bwraps%2Bpont%2Bneuf%26gbv%3D2%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"124\" src=\"http:\/\/tbn0.google.com\/images?q=tbn:qJqqu_UoPorKgM:http:\/\/www.christojeanneclaude.net\/sharedMedia\/PontNuef\/pn3.jpg\" height=\"78\" style=\"width: 124px; height: 78px; border: 1px solid\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><span> <\/span><span><span>In 1992, a\u00c2\u00a0disturbing historical installation decorated Pont Neuf to celebrate the 50th year of freedom from fascism. Swastikas were hung from the bridge during a recreation of then leader of the Free French government-in-exile (in England) Charles De Gaulle&#8217;s 1942 speech encouraging Frenchmen\u00c2\u00a0to resist the Nazis. The speech was rebroadcast from speakers on the obelisk at Place de la Concorde (&#8220;Place of Harmony&#8221;). <\/span><\/span><span><span>While Pont Neuf was undergoing renovations in the 1990s, French director Leos Carax made the 1991 movie <em>Les Amants du Pont-Neuf<\/em>, &#8220;Lovers on the Bridge,&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 starring Juliette Binoche and Denis Lavant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><span>Design newness, carriage accidents,\u00c2\u00a0burning at the stake, canvas wrapping, Nazi occupation recreations, renovations, movie-making, lovers toasting each other with wine: Pont Neuf has been the site of many things. All I require today is that it take me across the river\u00c2\u00a0for a <em>cafe creme<\/em> at Cafe des Beaux Arts.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are\u00c2\u00a036 bridges that cross the Seine river in Paris.
