The long escalator snakes up the museum&#8217;s west side (see the three views below). But the Pompidou itself isn&#8217;t my destination this morning. The waiter turns on the hanging propane heaters, but even with the awnings reflecting the warmth,\u00c2\u00a0I prefer a\u00c2\u00a0table inside.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I pay my 5 euro 10 for the <em>cafe creme<\/em> and buttered bread and walk further along <em>Rambuteau<\/em>, looking at the news agent&#8217;s display. Then I pass the <em>Pharmacie Beaubourg<\/em>, <em>Leroy Merlin<\/em> with plants and furniture (a small French version of Home Depot), <em>Chocolat Rouge<\/em> with crepes and paninis, the MK2 movie theater, <em>Vit&#8217;halles Fitness Club<\/em>, a sculpture high on a pedastal by Max Ernst, <em>Flunch<\/em> buffet restaurant, the <em>Tout Chaud<\/em> (everything hot) food stand featuring &#8220;maxi <em>croques<\/em>&#8221; (large grilled cheese sandwiches),\u00c2\u00a0the Movie Store where they&#8217;re playing\u00c2\u00a0Donovan&#8217;s &#8220;Mellow Yellow,&#8221; <em>Marissal Bucher<\/em> which sells German books, Beaubourg Optic, GAME store, Travelex Change, <em>Flunch<\/em> again, and\u00c2\u00a0 a Rambuteau metro stop portal. As I turn right, I\u00c2\u00a0see the coloring of the Pompidou&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0inside-out systems: blue for air conditioning, green for liquids, red for\u00c2\u00a0communications, and yellow for electricity.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/images.google.com\/imgres?imgurl=http:\/\/printfetish.com\/bloggedimages\/Pompidou.jpg&amp;imgrefurl=http:\/\/printfetish.com\/history\/&amp;h=521&amp;w=800&amp;sz=229&amp;hl=en&amp;start=59&amp;tbnid=9jW6TEIXgw6OYM:&amp;tbnh=93&amp;tbnw=143&amp;prev=\/images%3Fq%3Dpompidou%2Bmuseum%26start%3D40%26gbv%3D2%26ndsp%3D20%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"143\" src=\"http:\/\/tbn0.google.com\/images?q=tbn:9jW6TEIXgw6OYM:http:\/\/printfetish.com\/bloggedimages\/Pompidou.jpg\" height=\"93\" style=\"border: 1px solid\" \/><\/a>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/images.google.com\/imgres?imgurl=http:\/\/gardkarlsen.com\/Paris2006\/pipes_of_Centre_Pompidou.jpg&amp;imgrefurl=http:\/\/gardkarlsen.com\/Paris_France.htm&amp;h=600&amp;w=800&amp;sz=134&amp;hl=en&amp;start=2&amp;tbnid=D3EqTzu5YQ58iM:&amp;tbnh=107&amp;tbnw=143&amp;prev=\/images%3Fq%3Dpompidou%2Bmuseum%26gbv%3D2%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"133\" src=\"http:\/\/tbn0.google.com\/images?q=tbn:D3EqTzu5YQ58iM:http:\/\/gardkarlsen.com\/Paris2006\/pipes_of_Centre_Pompidou.jpg\" height=\"95\" style=\"width: 133px; height: 95px; border: 1px solid\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Crossing <em>Rue Renard<\/em>, I pass <em>La Station Beaubourg<\/em> brasserie and saladerie, a dentist&#8217;s office, <em>Mystic Tattoo<\/em> (and piercing), another pharmacy, the &#8220;Ed&#8221; food store where I go in to buy bananas and cheese, and two anonymous residential buildings. It takes three steps to cross tiny <em>Rue Simon le Franc<\/em>, and then I\u00c2\u00a0pass <em>Revendeur Agree<\/em> (an Apple computer store); <em>Marais Luxe<\/em> clothing; Gildo which sells <em>dragees<\/em> (sugared almonds)\u00c2\u00a0and <em>chocolats; <\/em><em>Delices de<\/em> <em>Beaubourg<\/em> which is a\u00c2\u00a0combination boulangerie, patisserie, and viennoiserie (seller of Vienna-style pastries); and then <em>L&#8217;Excelsior<\/em> brasserie.<\/p>\n<p>I swing across <em>Renard<\/em> again\u00c2\u00a0past a poster shouting <em>Prix inbattable! <\/em>(unbeatable price!) on\u00c2\u00a0a CD bin and around Beaubourg Souvenirs to my favorite space near the Pompidou: the <em>Place Igor Stravinsky.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/images.google.com\/imgres?imgurl=http:\/\/www.slamnet.org.uk\/kmg\/westbourne\/paris99\/Image30.gif&amp;imgrefurl=http:\/\/www.slamnet.org.uk\/kmg\/westbourne\/paris99\/museums.htm&amp;h=192&amp;w=216&amp;sz=14&amp;hl=en&amp;start=18&amp;um=1&amp;tbnid=kN9l5LJZQr4G3M:&amp;tbnh=95&amp;tbnw=107&amp;prev=\/images%3Fq%3Dstravinsky%2Bfountain%2Bparis%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"107\" src=\"http:\/\/tbn0.google.com\/images?q=tbn:kN9l5LJZQr4G3M:http:\/\/www.slamnet.org.uk\/kmg\/westbourne\/paris99\/Image30.gif\" height=\"95\" style=\"border: 1px solid\" \/><\/a>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/images.google.com\/imgres?imgurl=http:\/\/www.travel-images.com\/france780_r.jpg&amp;imgrefurl=http:\/\/www.travel-images.com\/france-paris16.html&amp;h=150&amp;w=100&amp;sz=9&amp;hl=en&amp;start=15&amp;um=1&amp;tbnid=kJ4L-Uf110gI2M:&amp;tbnh=96&amp;tbnw=64&amp;prev=\/images%3Fq%3Dstravinsky%2Bfountain%2Bparis%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"64\" src=\"http:\/\/tbn0.google.com\/images?q=tbn:kJ4L-Uf110gI2M:http:\/\/www.travel-images.com\/france780_r.jpg\" height=\"96\" style=\"border: 1px solid\" \/><\/a>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/images.google.com\/imgres?imgurl=http:\/\/www.geocities.com\/csh_home\/pictures\/tinguely_stphalle.jpg&amp;imgrefurl=http:\/\/www.geocities.com\/csh_home\/picture_october2005.html&amp;h=480&amp;w=640&amp;sz=23&amp;hl=en&amp;start=1&amp;um=1&amp;tbnid=oxEiQrTlHyQpkM:&amp;tbnh=103&amp;tbnw=137&amp;prev=\/images%3Fq%3Dstravinsky%2Bfountain%2Bparis%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"132\" src=\"http:\/\/tbn0.google.com\/images?q=tbn:oxEiQrTlHyQpkM:http:\/\/www.geocities.com\/csh_home\/pictures\/tinguely_stphalle.jpg\" height=\"96\" style=\"width: 132px; height: 96px; border: 1px solid\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Each of the figures in the <em>Homage to Stravinsky<\/em> fountain\u00c2\u00a0represents a composition by the Russian composer. Facing the fountain on the south are more restaurants, the <em>Restaurant Beaubourg<\/em>, <em>Le Jardin de The<\/em> (the tea garden), <em>Le Brise Miche<\/em> (Breaking Bread), <em>Dame Tartine<\/em> (Lady Open-faced Bread), and <em>Creperie Beaubourg.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>West of the fountain about 100 school kids are sitting on steps\u00c2\u00a0of the St. Merri cloisters eating chips and fruit. A knot of little boys plays soccer with an empty water bottle, kicking it dangerously close to some sitting adults. Another group of boys chases some pigeons. Mothers stand together, ignoring the misbehaviors. Along <em>Rue St. Merri<\/em> is the <em>Cafe Beaubourg<\/em> ice cream and crepes shop, then the <em>Poste de Police<\/em> with\u00c2\u00a0an old mosaic sign above reading <em>Bains-Douches Municipaux<\/em> (Municipal Baths and Showers).<\/p>\n<p>As I come back around to the\u00c2\u00a0west side of the Pompidou, I hear the activities of the buskers on the huge patio where people stand in line to buy museum tickets. Suddenly\u00c2\u00a0a very loud young man starts marching back and forth in front of\u00c2\u00a0his small white gym bag, projecting his\u00c2\u00a0voice, taking advantage of the acoustics,\u00c2\u00a0and throwing his long hair around.<\/p>\n<p>The old\u00c2\u00a0gypsy sawing away at her violin stops playing.\u00c2\u00a0Some teenage girls stop laughing. We all watch\u00c2\u00a0the pacing\u00c2\u00a0man\u00c2\u00a0warily, silently. He is either a brilliant thespian, a poet, or a madman. He does not put out a cup for money, and no one approachses him. Although we are used to the street theater at this cobbled square, the shouting man is in overwhelming auditory\u00c2\u00a0control and contrasts in a very adult way to the whimsy and childish play over at <em>Place Igor Stravinsky<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>To the west of the piazza are <em>Le Parvis<\/em> cafe, <em>Images de Beaubourg<\/em> and\u00c2\u00a0DF Kado for souvenirs, <em>Voyages Wasteels<\/em> travel agency, <em>Amorino<\/em> gelatos, <em>Centre Culturel de Servie<\/em>, <em>Souvenier Contemporaine<\/em>, <em>Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles<\/em> exhibition space, the\u00c2\u00a0alley <em>Rue de Venise<\/em>, <em>Le Mont Lozere<\/em> tea shop, <em>L&#8217;univers de Leo<\/em> for wild\u00c2\u00a0home furnishings, <em>Un Instant de Reve (An Instant of a Daydream)\u00c2\u00a0<\/em>for hats and sunglasses, <em>Images de Demain<\/em> (Images of Tomorrow)\u00c2\u00a0with gifts and souvenirs, and <em>Le Cavalier Bleu<\/em> (the Blue Knight) tea shop.<\/p>\n<p>Then I&#8217;m back to the news agent on <em>Rambuteau<\/em> and the row of gray Velib&#8217; rental bikes. This area around the Pompidou almost qualitifies as a <em>quartier <\/em>(neighborhood) in itself.
