\nThe Pocahantas Halloween that skater’s winter
\nHundreds of little white girls dressed as Indians
\nToo cold to go door to door
\nThey raided the stores in the biggest mall in Anchorage
\nMoms wearing ranch mink
\nCarrying their daughters’ pink coats lined with rabbit fur
\nThose trap lines are so romantic
\nSulking teenage clerks handing out cheap waxpaper twists of taffy
\nNo, we don’t have Milky Ways or Snickers or Dairy Milks
\nThis is all we’ve got.<\/p>\n
They’ll go skating tomorrow on lakes and rivers
\nFrozen down and down
\nA real skater’s winter
\nHuge horses raised along the Scottish Clyde will pull sleighs
\nAnd kettles of chili and chowder, hot chocolate and coffee
\nWill be slopped into mitten-wrapped Styrofoam cups.<\/p>\n
The snow-removal people are all complaining
\nWe’ll go out of business
\nExpensive equipment and mountains of grit
\nSitting around, waiting for snow.<\/p>\n
Everything turned around and out of sorts
